About a dozen people attended a Scam Prevention Academy facilitated by the Ventura County District Attorney's Office on June 13 and 20, 2024. The two-part series, held across Ventura County, including on our campus, is designed to educate seniors about the most prevalent scams in Ventura County.

It was presented by Deputy District Attorney Melissa McMurdo, Senior Victim Advocate Kellie Tyndall and their colleague, Aimee Sosa. Participants learned about business imposter scams, charity fraud, government impersonator scams, grandkid and family scams, health insurance scams, home repair scams, identity theft, investment scams, job and money-making scams, romance scams, tech support scams, unwanted calls and text messages, and "you've won" scams.

They learned about how each works, such as starting with a call, email, text or message on social media. Then they learned what to do in each instance. They were also encouraged to pass on the information they learned to a friend. Each brought home a Scam Prevention Academy Certificate after completing the workshop.
